What I love about Athens is that it’s a city full of colorful contrasts. Traffic crawls along concrete blocks while around a corner there’s a cobbled lane lined with bougainvillea swathed tavernas and cafes. A plain entranceway can easily affront a charming outdoor cinema that serves ouzo under the stars. A little alley will lead into a spacious and beautifully chic cocktail bar.
On your vacation, you’ll definitely want to take in the best views of Athens. Then there are the ancient sights like the Acropolis, owning a larger importance than anywhere else – built on democracy, Western civilization, and philosophy. In the Greek capital, the ancient, historic, hipster, and modern merge – making it an incredible city to discover.
When thinking about what to wear in summer in Athens, think hot and pack your luggage with that thought in mind. While many must-see sights are in the center, the Athenian Riviera is worth escaping to for a day – breezy and lined with idyllic beaches. So be prepared for that too. This female packing list for Athens has you covered.

Here’s what to pack and wear for a four-day summer city break in beautiful Athens.
Female Packing List for Athens: Clothing
Have a good mix of neutral colors. You don’t want to wear black during the daytime, because a heat wave is possible and it will be hot nevertheless. If you are considering bringing anything dark along, know that you’ll be more comfortable wearing it after the sun sets.
- 2 skirts: I recommend bringing two types of skirts – or three if you want some more variety. I suggest you choose from short and free-flowing, a mid-length skirt and free-flowing, or a long free-flowing skirt. Choose lightweight material and the keywords here are free-flowing. That will keep you cool and stylish.
- 1 pair of shorts: Shorts will come in handy for any of the scenic walks around Athens, the pretty walk up Lycabettus Hill, or climbing the ancient rocks of the Acropolis.
- 1 pair of light pants: I wouldn’t recommend bringing jeans which can feel too constricting in the city heat. Bring a pair of lightweight travel pants instead, in a neutral color, that you can mix and match with your clothing.
- 1 light jacket: This is something you’ll likely use at night if you are on the Athens coast or spending an evening on a nearby island. Consider a windbreaker, a stylish blazer for layering, or a short denim or cotton jacket.
- 2 scarves: Scarves serve many purposes on a Greek holiday. Have a light-colored one that you can fit easily into your purse during the day. It’s a good cover for your shoulders if the sun is too strong or if you happen to visit a church or monastery you may need to cover bare shoulders and arms out of respect. A second scarf is useful to bring along at night to change looks. Dark colors are great for layering over tank tops if you feel a breeze at the rooftop bars.
- 1 belt: Stick to beige or black, something to match your shoes.
- 4 tank tops or T-shirts: Pack solid, sleeveless tank tops. A great layering item.
- 3 blouses for going out: Dress up for dinner or a night out on the town. It will still be warm at night so choose lightweight fabrics. I suggest short-sleeved or sleeveless styles that match your skirts or pants.
- 2 dresses: Pack a dress, like a maxi dress, that works for you during the day — perfect for a pretty pic at a scenic Athens spot. A second dress suggestion is a flattering mid-length dress for a nice dinner or drink out.
- 2-3 bras: One nude bra for your light-colored tops is a must for any female packing list for Athens. A third bra would be if you are taking along any tank tops that require a strapless bra.
- 5 pairs of underwear
- See why we love fast-drying underwear for travel
- 1 swimsuit: Necessary for a day at the beach or for a dip at the hotel pool.
- 1 cover-up for your swimsuit: For lounging by the pool or beach bar.
- 1 pair of pajamas

Shoes
Walking around Athens isn’t the easiest. In short, you may want to keep the heels at home. There are lots of cobbled lanes, brick paths, uneven sidewalks, and uneven outdoor steps. The archaeological sites are full of weathered rocks that may look harmless but are surprisingly slippery to walk over.
- 1 pair of platform sandals: A great pair of platform sandals is the perfect stylish substitute for heels and fits in well in the Mediterranean urban summer landscape. Look great while hanging out at Athens’ hot spots. Make sure you can walk on cobblestone streets in them!
- 1 pair of sandals: Take along neutral strappy sandals that match your skirts and dresses and are comfy to walk around in.
- 1 pair of flip-flops: Good to use by the pool or on a beach day trip.
- 1 pair of stylish sneakers. Make sure they’re good-soled, closed, comfortable walking shoes with a decent grip: Take along shoes with a decent grip on them that also cover your toes. Very useful when you are climbing the Acropolis, for example. Make sure they go along with the skirts, shorts, or pants you are taking along.
- Socks for your sneakers or closed shoes.

Toiletries
- Shampoo and conditioner: Travel size.
- Consider packing solid toiletries
- Soap or body wash
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss
- Deodorant
- Hairbrush, hair ties, headbands, and bobby pins: This is super important for any female packing list for Athens. You’ll likely opt to wear a sun hat and want to keep your hair off your neck in the heat. You can put together braids or a nice ponytail underneath to keep extra cool.
- Face wipes: For freshening up during the day.
- Makeup: Lipsticks that pop are perfect for the day. You don’t want to be loaded with too much makeup considering the hot temps.
- Oil-free lotions
- Any prescription medications and tampons
- Sunglasses: This is a must accessory and not just for style purposes. The sun here is strong!
- Sun hat: This is a necessity on your packing list for Athens. To protect your skin and for style take along a neutral-colored sun hat for walking around during sunny days. I recommend a fedora type. You can always buy one in Athens, they are sold on every corner. It can be a pain to pack a hat.
- Sunscreen: Bring along your favorite brand, especially for your face.
- One beach towel: For a beach day. A Turkish Towel makes a great travel towel.
- Jewelry

Electronics and Bags
This varies from person to person…
- 1 Camera
- 1 or more European plug adapters: Consider what you’ll need to charge at the same time.
- Computer or tablet
- 1 large collapsible shopping bag: As you shop for Greek souvenirs in Monastiraki, Plaka, or any neighborhood in old Athens, you’re bound to pick up some souvenirs. Have this bag to pull out to place your purchases in along the way. (A stuffable backpack will also do the trick!)
- 1 small evening purse: Take along a small stylish clutch to go along with your night outfits.
- 1 cross-body bag: Keep your valuables safer with a purse you can strap over your body. In general, very convenient while you are exploring Athens’ ancient sites and the city overall.

What to Wear in Athens: Tips from HPL
Marissa’s female packing list for Athens is super comprehensive but you can pack lighter if you don’t want to have a completely different outfit each day and evening. You can also forgo some of the dressier items, like an evening purse or platform sandals if you don’t plan on going to fancy restaurants.
Whatever your packing style, thinking like the locals will help you to feel the most comfortable in Athens. Think comfortable yet conservative with a smart casual vibe. Keep it light and simple with layers. If bright colors are your thing, then this is the perfect destination for you!
Spring (March-May)
While it’s probably going to be nice and warm in Athens in spring, you’ll want to add a light jacket or cardigan to your packing list for the evenings especially if you’re going closer to March. There may also be the occasional rain so come prepared. If your trip is closer to summer you’ll want to pack more lightweight outfits.
Summer (June – August)
Like Marissa said, it’s going to be HOT! Sleeveless tops and breezy dresses will be your staples. Opt for materials that are moisture-wicking and lightweight.
Check out our post on the best fabrics for travel clothing to ensure you know exactly what to wear so that you don’t end up a sweaty mess at the end of a long and hot day.
Fall/Autumn (September – November)
While autumn in Athens is still warm, layering is key (especially in the evenings). Your summer wardrobe with a few layering pieces added will be perfect. Bring your sandals, but pack a warmer shoe option as well.
Winter (December – February)
While it never really gets too cold in Athens, you’ll want to bring a few warmer pieces for the evenings. Layering is key because you’ll probably be quite warm during the daytime. Make sure you pack shoes with good grip because the pavements can get slippery in the rain.
The Weather in Athens in Summer
Athens has a Mediterranean climate which means things are going to get hot and sweaty!
The average temperature range in June is 20°C – 29°C (68°F – 84°F), in July is 23°C – 30°C (73°F – 86°F), and in August is 23°C – 32°C (73°F – 90°F). Keep that in mind when deciding what to wear. While the evenings may cool off a bit, you’re most likely not going to be needing a cardigan.
There’s also almost no rain to take the heat out of the air and things are going to be dry. If you suffer from dry skin or lips, make sure you bring ample lotion and chapstick. We love the solid body moisturizers from Ethique.

Top Thing to do in Athens
You’re going to want to spend your days visiting beaches, enjoying the sunshine at outdoor cafes, and escaping the heat at museums. Keep in mind that summer is peak tourist season so most places are going to be busy. Try to get an early start to avoid the crowds and the heat.
Here are some of the top things to do in Athens in Summer:
- Acropolis of Athens: The remains of this ancient fortified city are situated on a rocky outcrop above Athens. Here you’ll see the Parthenon, the Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus, multiple temples, and more. You’ll definitely want to wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen.
- Athens Riviera: The south-east coastline of Athens is home to beautiful beaches and marinas. Make sure you keep a day open to explore them. Keep things easy with a simple travel dress that doubles as a beach cover-up.
- National Archaeological Museum: The largest archaeological museum in Greece that houses one of the greatest collections of artifacts of Greek antiquity.
- Anafiotika, Plaka: Plaka is a neighborhood in Athens that is one of the best spots for shopping. The closer to the Acropolis you get, the older and more interesting streets you’ll find. Anafiotika is a charming section of Plaka with narrow, photogenic streets and shops. Wear comfortable sandals and bring a collapsible shopping bag or stuffable backpack for any souvenirs you may buy.
- Monastiraki Square: Located in the heart of Athens, this square features a Greek Orthodox church, a mosque, a metro station, the pillars of Hadrian’s Library, and a host of shops. On Sundays, you’ll find a flea market.
- Filopappos Hill: You’ll find an amazing view of the Acropolis from the top of this hill. You’ll also be able to see the Aegean Sea. This is another place where you’ll want to wear your walking shoes. If you’re unsure about the best shoes to bring, check out our blog post, on how to choose your travel shoes. During Easter, you’ll see children flying kites from here.
- Psyrri: A trendy neighborhood filled with restaurants, bars, vibrant nightlife, and small boutique shops. This is a great place to go for dinner and drinks wearing some of your dressier outfits on your packing list.

Leave your heels and platforms at home. The Athens sidewalks are treacherous. Marble and tile are pretty to look at, make a terrible surface for walking. I’ve lived here for two years and I know four people who have suffered broken bones just walking down street. Your flat sandals should be fine, especially if you take them to a shoe repair shop and have a grip sole added. I have done this with all of my shoes and it gives me a lot more confidence walking around the city.
