Let’s talk fall

Besides being the best time of year, it’s also a fun one in terms of clothing because you get to start dressing all cozy like.

But it is a time when travelers start to worry about the space available in their bags.

Cozy clothing = bulky clothing. Right?

Well yes, and no.

In this article, we’re sharing three tips to create a feeling of cozy without as much bulk.

1. Layers

You may be thinking, “Enough with the layers already!”

Sorry, friend.

Layers are important in all seasons when trying to create your most minimal yet versatile travel wardrobe. Full stop.

Layers also make you feel all cozy!

Now the key here is to think about packing thinner, less bulky layers if at all possible. That way they can layer for warm coziness but also be broken apart if the weather ends up turning into a warm spring vibe unexpectedly (which seems to be the norm these days).

Here’s how you can do it:

  • Add in a base layer set, preferably made of a natural fabric like merino wool. These base layer tops and leggings from Zorali are a great example. Items like these can be worn underneath other clothing for instant warmth and coziness.
  • A button down flannel tunic makes another great layering piece for fall travel. You can wear this with leggings or jeans, buttoned or unbuttoned, or under a vest or sweater. Plus, it screams FALL in all the right ways!
  • Finally, a packable puffy vest is another great layering item for your fall travel wardrobe. I’m loving the retro vibe of this one from Cotopaxi.

2. Simple Accessories

Obviously, we’re going to add a cozy scarf or a beanie to our fall travel wardrobe mix.

Scarves and beanies are an easy way to change up your look while still packing light.

If you’re not a fan of beanies you could also add a knitted headband to keep your ears warm and if you are traveling closer to winter, you could pack a pair of gloves as well.

But here’s one area of fall accessories that you might not have thought about before…

Socks!

While the humble sock might not seem like a big deal, trust me, the addition of a pair or 2 of cozy merino wool socks (like these from Smartwool) are essential for your fall travel wardrobe.

Merino wool is a great option because it is naturally temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, and odor-resistant, meaning your feet will stay dry, warm, and comfortable no matter where your fall adventures take you.

Do you absolutely need to start traveling with boots in the fall?

Not necessarily.

Maybe all you need is a cozier pair of socks to keep your feet feeling toasty.

3. Think About a Travel Uniform

For those who absolutely adore a chunky knit sweater or wool poncho for their fall travels, it might be wise to start thinking about utilizing that item as part of a travel uniform.

So what is a travel uniform?

A travel uniform can be specific clothing you pack when you travel, or it can be specific criteria of clothing that you pack when you travel.

For example, you may always wear the same outfit on your travel day. My travel day uniform typically includes a long merino wool cardigan.

Uniforms simplify life.

And yes, while you might be seeing the item in all of your travel photos… it’s just for this trip!

Having a specific travel uniform for a trip can also help you remember that trip. For example, if you choose a chunky knit sweater for your trip to France, every time you wear that sweater, you’ll remember your time there.

I’m a big fan of the travel uniform for many reasons. You can learn more in this video:

With these three tips, I hope you now understand that:

Cozy clothing DOES NOT = bulky clothing

Packing light for fall doesn’t mean sacrificing staying cozy.

Focusing on versatile layers, choosing impactful accessories, and creating a travel uniform, means you can have the best of both worlds. Cozy and light!

By crafting a travel wardrobe that brings warmth and comfort without the bulk, you’re giving yourself the freedom to enjoy everything fall has to offer without being weighed down by excessive luggage.

I run the show at Her Packing List and love packing ultralight. In fact, I once traveled for 3 entire weeks with just the contents of a well-packed 12L handbag. When I'm not obsessing over luggage weight, I'm planning adventures or just snuggling with my pet rabbit, Sherlock Bunz.
