This is a post in an ongoing feature on Her Packing List called “The One Little Thing“. Each week or two, I’ll be interviewing a traveling lady to find out the one little thing she just can’t travel without. This one is brought to you by Lottie Mortimer.I’m Lottie from the Ambling Explorer. I’m from a sleepy countryside town in England but I’ve managed to escape a few times and I’m presently studying in the sunny state of Queensland, Australia for a year. With the Australian summer coming up it’s more important than ever for me to stay sun safe.
Sun cream in stick form is my one little thing that I can’t travel without…
What one little thing can you not travel without?
I always have my Soltan Active Ultra Resistance Suncare Protection Stick in my bag. Sun cream in a stick is portable, easy to use and no mess. Also this specific stick is fantastic because it is SPF 50, water and sweat resistant and moisturising as well.

Why has this one item been so important to you?
I burn incredibly easy. I have such pale skin and I’m one of the worst offenders for forgetting to re-apply my sun cream. This stick is easy to use and small so I always have it with me, which means that I tend to reapply more often. Also, if the sun suddenly emerges from nowhere, I have it on me. My sun protection stick has served me well, trekking in Asia and Africa. It’s even more useful now than ever, since I’m studying in Australia for a year.
How packable is it? Does it take up much room? Is it heavy?
Extremely packable – it’s lightweight and small, at only 25g. Even better, because it’s a stick, if you’re just travelling carry-on, then it counts a solid. It’s also ideal to just slip in your bag on day out if you’re a bit unsure about what the weather is going to do.
Would you recommend this to your travel friends?
Definitely. It’s one of my travel must-haves. However, I wouldn’t usually rely on just my stick alone. I would start the day by applying liquid sun cream and then just use the stick when I’m out and about.
Can you name one instance or situation where you were so happy to have this item with you?
When I was hiking up Mt Kilimanjaro it was perfect. At altitude, with the pressure changes, liquid sun cream has a tendency to start oozing out of the bottle uncontrollably. When we had a break, I could take out my stick, reapply on my exposed skin without having to worry if the sun cream had rubbed in or not (it’s clear), and then quickly pop it away again. It was quick and no faff. Even better, it is designed for active use, so ideal for hiking.
How did you hear about this item?
I stumbled across it in Boots when shopping for sun cream and thought it sounded useful. I’m so glad that I decided to give it a whirl.
What sort of traveller is this item perfect for?
Since the stick is for ‘active use,’ which means that it is water and sweat resistant as well as being moisturising in harsher conditions, I would especially recommend it for hikers, whether you’re going somewhere sunny or snowy. But really this is ideal for anyone to just slip into their handbag to stay sun safe.
