This is a post in an ongoing feature on Her Packing List called “The One Little Thing“. Each week or two, I’ll be interviewing a traveling lady to find out the one little thing she just can’t travel without. This one comes to you from Yvonne Ivanescu.
Buenos Dias! I’m Yvonne and I am a travel writer by night and an unemployed graduate student by day. I hail from the largely unknown city of Mississauga [right next to Toronto] and was inspired to start Under the Yew Tree after spending one year living in Santiago de Chile. I dream of one day backpacking across South America but until then I plan on finishing my travel memoir, carry on travel writing and continue to experiment with social media here and there.
What’s the one little thing you can’t travel without?
My Estee Lauder Double Wear Concealer. Whenever I pack for a trip I always adopt the phrase less is more. At home there is enough space for my concealer, foundation and mineral powder [including brushes] but when I pack for a trip I always try to include items that are multifaceted.

Why has this one item been so important to you?
This little stick of concealer packs quite the punch. The product itself is light weight, waterproof and has medium-high coverage. Although it is a concealer I use it for a variety of things; it covers my dark circles, acne and redness – at times I even use as my foundation as it also contains SPF 10. In short it is a multi-purpose, long lasting and high coverage concealer sealed in carry-on friendly package.
How packable is it? Does it take up much room? Is it heavy?
The concealer itself is in a long tube that contains 7 ml of product. It takes up as much space as your lip gloss but does so much more. It is carry-on friendly and can be easily placed in your smallest purse – ready to be taken to any destination.
Why would you recommend this to your travel friends?
It really is a great and economical concealer/foundation option. It is multi-purpose and although it might seem small, my tubes last me anywhere from six months to one year.
Can you name one incident or situation where you were so happy to have this item with you?
In Bocas del Toro [Panana] I was working at a dive shop for a couple of months which meant that I was in and out of the water every single day. Beach living is quite relaxed, so make-up looks quite silly. When I started diving the salt water didn’t agree with my skin and I broke out a little. I had a crush on one of the instructors and I would apply the concealer in the morning to cover up my pimples. I didn’t want him to notice that I had make-up on, but at the same time I wanted to cover up my little imperfections. The make-up gave me that “natural” look and I used it religiously in the morning and even I went out at night.
How did you hear about this item?
My mom actually introduced me to Estee Lauder at a young age because of the company’s famous gift with purchase. One day I went to try some products. I happened to stumble upon the concealer and decided on a whim to buy it. Three years later and I am still loyal to my double wear concealer.
What sort of traveler is this item perfect for?
Since it is such a versatile product, I would recommend it for any woman. I’ve used it diving in Bocas del Toro, sighting seeing on a scorching day in Panama City, walking to work on a cold morning in Santiago … it works in any setting and that is why it makes it perfect for anyone who is looking for something small that fulfills more than one promise.
