This post is part of a series in which ladies on the road offer a review of their backpacks. Today’s review comes from Didar.
Hi! I’m Didar, a 19 year old International Relations student. I was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey. I spent my childhood traveling thanks to my father’s business. I’ve visited a diverse set of countries: Greece, Russia, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Switzerland to name a few. I’m about to go on a train trip across Europe and I’ll be taking my Everlane Snap Backpack as a daypack.
In this post, however, I will share some tips and tricks to show how the Everlane backpack can double as a traveling backpack for your weekend getaway!
What’s your backpack brand and model?
My backpack is Everlane’s The Twill Snap Reverse Denim Backpack. It is available at Everlane.com for $65.
How long have you had your backpack and where have you traveled with it?
I’ve had it for about a year, so I haven’t had an opportunity to take it abroad. I have used it on domestic trips in Turkey. I was contemplating purchasing Everlane’s “Weekender” for short vacations before I realized that the backpack could be more advantageous. Besides, I could fit almost anything I needed if I made the most of the space I had.
What factors were most important to you in choosing a backpack?
I originally purchased it for daily use at school so it’s size was important. It is much more spacious than an average backpack. This means I can take all my heavy textbooks, MacBook Pro and even some clothes to stay overnight at a friend’s house. Its color goes with pretty much everything in my closet. The fabric not only looks but feels great. The quality of the material was important and it hasn’t disappointed me so far.
Although Everlane is by no means cheap, their business model allows them to sell their products for less than the traditional retail price.
What do you like most about your backpack? Any down sides?
I really like its minimalist design. I get complimented on a daily basis when I have it with me. It has two side pockets, a padded laptop compartment and a relatively spacious front pocket. These internal features can be utilized to accommodate a minimalist traveler’s needs.
I try to make the most of this highly spacious backpack by packing the right products. I keep my clothes in two Pack-It Specter compression cubes. I use the laptop compartment as a divider for additional pressure to keep my clothes in an upright position.
Most backpacks have many small compartments that actually take up most of the space. This really limits one’s options while deciding on a packing strategy. With Everlane’s huge space the possibilities are endless. When I put all my clothes and bulky items inside, there is still plenty of space on the side for socks, flip-flops and other loose items.
I recommend packing as light as possible. Yet, I can pack at least half a dozen t-shirts and a couple of shorts and skirts with no problem. I can easily fit folding ballet flats in the bottom of one side pocket and keep my chargers on top. I often keep my wallet in the front pocket for quick reach. However, if you want additional safety, I recommend keeping it inside the laptop compartment. This way you can use the front pocket for your toiletry bag to separate it from your clothes.
There aren’t many downsides. Still, I could really use a zippered hidden pocket inside. Also, I’ve learned that they don’t have a plan to bring back the sold out “fig” color anytime soon. If we could make that happen, that would be great.
Tell us about the fit and comfort level of your backpack.
I feel very comfortable when I’m carrying it. I wish its backpack straps were more adjustable for different body types. Its back padding increases its level of comfort immensely, although it can get a bit sweaty sometimes. Mind you, it is not meant for long backpacking adventures.
If you want to take your backpack as carry-on luggage, can you?
Of course! In fact, I would not advise you to check-in your delicate backpack. This fact alone reveals the beauty of traveling with an everyday backpack: I never have to change anything about my daily routine. I can pack for up to a week and leave my house for a vacation as if I’m going out for school.
Have you found the size to be too small, just right, or too large?
It is just right! Its dimensions are 13” L x 6” W x 18” H. I can’t fit much in most of my everyday backpacks and carrying my 45 litre backpack just for a small weekend getaway sounds like torture. Purchasing a weekender or a small luggage is unnecessary when my Everlane backpack is just enough. After I’m all packed, there is still some space to fit just a bit more. The key is to resist that urge. You never know what you will find on your journey.
Overall, would you recommend your backpack?
Absolutely! It was love at first sight. I’d been meaning to get one for a couple of years but unfortunately Everlane does not have international shipping. Plus, it sells out very quickly. I had to make some arrangements before I could get it shipped to my address. Now that I’m a proud owner of an Everlane backpack, I can recommend it without a doubt. It’s ideal for everyday use but you can make it work for travel by packing it right.
