This is a post in an ongoing feature on Her Packing List called “The One Little Thing“. Each week or two, we’ll be interviewing a traveling lady to find out the one little thing she just can’t travel without. This one comes to you from Perri Cohn.
I’m Perri, and I blog about vegan recipes and restaurants on LifeGoneVegan.com. I’m from New York and I’ve traveled to Israel, Italy, France, Canada, a few islands in the Caribbean, and all around the U.S. I’ll be reviewing Emergen-C dietary supplement.
What one little thing can you not travel without?
I cannot travel without my Emergen-C dietary supplement packets. I take them everywhere!

Why has this one item been so important to you?
Emergen-C is not only a great dietary supplement, but can really help when you’re feeling ill and/or severely dehydrated, two things that are never good while traveling. It’s full of vitamin C, zinc, and electrolytes to help you fight colds and hydrate quickly, and the packets are so convenient to take along.
How packable is it? Does it take up much room? Is it heavy?
It is extremely packable! They are individually sealed packets of powder about the size of a credit card, and are sold in most drugstores. You can put one in your pocket, purse, wallet, or first aid kit, and use with water when you need it. They are so lightweight and compact, you won’t notice any extra weight, and they are totally TSA-friendly.
Why would you recommend this to your travel friends?
I would recommend this to everyone! They’re so light and don’t take up any room, and they can save you from dehydration or illness in an emergency (pun intended).
Can you name one incident or situation where you were so happy to have this item with you?
Five years ago I took a trip to Israel in the summer, where it can reach temperatures well over 100 degrees in some places. My first day on the trip I was hiking a mountain in the Golan Heights where it was hot and extremely humid. I didn’t realize how dehydrated I was until I blacked out on the trail and had to be rescued.
After downing several giant bottles of water, I was still feeling terrible and couldn’t figure out why. I had brought the Emergen-C packets along in case I got a cold or a flu, but a friend suggested I try one to help with hydration and replenishing my electrolytes. It worked perfectly and I felt so much better.
My trip was a ten day group bus tour followed by two weeks on an archaeological excavation, both of which included a lot of physical activity in extreme weather. I’m so glad I brought the Emergen-C, because it really helped me out when I was struggling with the heat.
How did you hear about this item?
I heard about this item from my dad, who suggested I take it with me on international trips. After my experience with dehydration in Israel, I have taken these with me everywhere I go, especially if it’s a warmer climate.
What sort of traveler is this item perfect for?
This item is perfect for more active travelers, but is a great dietary supplement for anyone. Hydration is crucial for an active lifestyle and it is so important to drink enough water. Dehydration can seriously affect your health and well-being, and often you don’t realize how dehydrated you are until you start to feel sick or dizzy. Emergen-C is also a great immune supplement for those of us who catch colds easily (like me!), especially if you’re visiting lots of crowded, touristy areas and taking public transportation frequently.
