This is a post in an ongoing feature on Her Packing List called “The One Little Thing“. Each week or two, I’ll be interviewing a traveling lady to find out the one little thing she just can’t travel without. This one comes to you from Mariah Friend.
Hi! My name is Mariah and I’m currently traveling around the world during a “gap” year. I’m originally from the Midwest but now I’m a full-time vagabond as I search for a new place to call home and have adventures along the way. I just spent the summer in France and right now I’m in Morocco enjoying the bright sun and colorful markets (not to mention the delicious food)! You can read more about living a life of simple adventure on my blog The Barefoot Beat.
What one little thing can you not travel without?
I’ve been traveling the globe for six months now and I have to admit my favorite and most used item I’ve been traveling with me is a bit surprising. In fact, I almost didn’t buy it. Thankfully, my best friend convinced me that a black maxi dress would be the perfect item of clothing to take with me on the road and she was right!

How Packable is it? Does it take up much room? Is it heavy?
It’s very easy to pack! It takes up a bit more space than other items of clothing, but it makes up for it in versatility. It’s made of lightweight material so it’s easy to compress and doesn’t wrinkle!
Why would you recommend this to your travel friends?
It’s comfortable, and black goes with everything! The length is perfect for visiting more conservative countries as well as entering cathedrals. As an added bonus I don’t have to worry about shaving my legs! It’s also my favorite outfit to wear for those long days of traveling spent on buses or planes. I’ve slept overnight in airports wearing my maxi dress and it’s almost like having a built in blanket keeping me warm.
Can you name one incident or situation where you were so happy to have this item with you?
Every single day! The best thing about my maxi dress is not having to worry if it’s going to fit. Like most women, my weight during my travels fluctuates (hello Parisian pastries!) and when I’m feeling bloated or just don’t feel like wearing pants, it’s the perfect thing to slip on and still look put together. With a few colored cardigans and cute jewelry, the options for outfits are numerous and I can tailor it to my activities. I’ve worn my maxi dress on the beach and out to dinner and it’s perfect for both occasions.
How did you hear about this item?
I was shopping with my best friend planning my outfits for a year of travel and she recommended I purchase this dress. Once I tried it on and realized how comfortable it was, I practically ran to the register!
What type of traveler is this item perfect for?
Everyone! I’m not usually one to wear a lot of dresses, but even girls who don’t like to dress up will benefit from the versatility of this dress. It can be as casual or fancy as you want and can even be worn with layers for cooler weather.
