This is a post in an ongoing feature on Her Packing List called “The One Little Thing“. Each week or two, I’ll be interviewing a traveling lady to find out the one little thing she just can’t travel without. This one is brought to you by Sarah Clarke.
I’m Sarah, an elementary art teacher who is obsessed with traveling and experiencing new things! I share my stories and travel adventures on my blog, Wake Up Mona.
I am originally from Ontario, Canada, but live and work in the beautiful state of North Carolina. I love the Atlantic Canada, and just spent my entire summer backpacking through Eastern Europe. I am especially fascinated by Hungary and the former Yugoslavia countries.
What one little thing can you not travel without?
Definitely my circle scarf. Not only is it stylish, it keeps me warm and is extremely versatile.

Why has this one item been so important to you?
I’ve used it so much and take it almost everywhere! I’ve worn it on chilly ferry rides in Newfoundland, used it as a pillow on a night train in Serbia, and as a picnic blanket in parks.
How packable is it? Does it take up much room? Is it heavy?
A circle scarf is very packable! I use it a lot on travel days so sometimes I don’t even have to pack it. When I do, it takes up as much room as a t-shirt.
Why would you recommend this to your travel friends?
It’s warm, versatile and circle scarves come in so many colors and styles. I got mine from American Apparel but you can find them almost anywhere. Just make sure it’s good quality. I’ve had mine for over 4 years and use it constantly.
Can you name one incident or situation where you were so happy to have this item with you?
I went on a hiking trip in the NC mountains a couple weeks ago and I was so glad I brought it. The wind was relentless, so I wrapped the scarf around my neck and head to keep me warm and to stop my hair from blowing in my face!
How did you hear about this item?
When I was in university I learned how to knit and a circle scarf is one of the first things I made! Since then, I have seen them become increasingly popular and available in plenty of stores.
What type of traveler is this item perfect for?
Anyone! If you want to stay warm, look stylish and have something that can perform a multitude of tasks, then a circle scarf is for you.
