Staying fit and healthy on the road can be tougher than you might think. Yes, you will probably do a lot of walking and will carry heavy bags or suitcases but without routines or a gym membership it can be hard to stay in shape.
You will probably be eating out for most meals and sampling all the local specialities, not to mention the local beers and spirits. Before you know it your baggy travel pants are skin tights and your favourite bikini will barely cover your bits.
But do not fear, there is a solution and you need nothing more than your laptop and a DVD or two.
If I say the words ‘workout DVD’ I’m sure many of you will be thinking of the 1980’s DVDs with G-string leotards and brightly coloured ankle warmers. Thankfully, you won’t see a G-strings with these modern day alternatives but you are free to do these workouts wearing whatever you please.
Exercise DVDs are great while you are travelling because you will get a head to toe workout using just a tiny amount of space which is perfect for small hotel or hostel dorms. You don’t need any complex equipment or kit and you can substitute weights with water bottles.
You might feel a bit silly if you are working out in a hostel dorm so grab a group of girls and have some fun with it. I’d rather feel self-conscious during a half hour working, and then feel fabulous and anything but self-conscious on the beach.
So here are my favourite workout DVDs that you can do in tiny spaces and will leave you feeling buff on the beach:
Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred
This is the ultimate workout DVD and there’s a good reason that it has been the number one best-seller since it hit the shops. Jillian Michaels, personal trainer on The Biggest Looser USA, is well known for being one tough cookie. The DVD is hard and will leave your muscles aching but each exercise is split into 30 second sections so it is almost impossible to lose motivation. Just as your legs begin to shake and you want to give up, you will begin a new exercise that focuses on a different muscle group.
There are three workouts, beginner, intermediate and advanced, but they are all tough so prepare to sweat. The workouts are really effective because you target as many muscles at the same time as possible, so 20 minutes with Jillian is far better than an hour in the gym.
Who is it for?
This DVD is great for anyone who wants a fast and effective workout and needs some encouragement to stay motivated.
10 Minute Workout – Blast off Belly Fat
I’m a massive fan of the 10 Minute Workout collection and this abs DVD is my favourite. It’s perfect if you don’t have much time because you will feel a difference with just one 10 minute section. There are five sections to choose from and you can do them all together for the ultimate flat belly workout.
Who is it for?
This DVD is perfect for anyone who is short on time but wants their abs to look smoking hot on the beach.
Rodney Yee Power Yoga Total Body
I love to find a good yoga class while I’m traveling but it can be expensive if you are just dropping in for one or two classes. This Power Yoga DVD by Rodney Yee is not for the faint hearted as it targets your whole body in a tough session. You will feel long, limber and relaxed by the end of this DVD and it’s a great alternative if you can’t get to a class during your travels.
Who is it for?
This DVD is recommended for intermediate yoga students but I was new to yoga when I first tried it. As a complete beginner, I found it tough but possible.
The Tracey Anderson Method: Mat Workout
Tracey Anderson is better known as being the personal trainer to the likes of Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Shakira and the DVD promises to tone up your muscles without adding unfeminine bulk (e.g. The Perfect Bikini Bod). Tracey’s method is to tone your smaller muscles which will leave you aching in places you didn’t even know you had and this DVD has been described as Pilates on Acid. The DVD was released with the intention to be used alongside the Tracey Anderson Dance Cardio workout which is great for burning calories, but you may struggle if you are short on space.
Who is it for?
This is for anyone who likes to dance off those calories but doesn’t have the space for a full dance routine. This can also be a fun one if you are doing it with a group of friends.
