As long as you don’t mind the heat, summer is a great time to visit New York City. Beaches, concerts, Fourth of July festivities, films in Bryant Park are just some of the joys that a summer in the city has to offer. But for a summer stay in New York, what will you need?
Summer in New York City is very hot, humid and sticky, but they do have anomalies too, so the best you can do before starting to pack is to check the weather forecast.
During summer the temperature in NYC usually goes from 69°F (21°C) to 85°F (29°C), so for a summer visit you will probably need to pack lightweight fabrics such as cotton and linen, as these natural fibres will breathe in the heat. Remember black will hide dirt but absorb heat, while white and ivory attract dirt but keep you cool. Pair your summer attire with sandals but also bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes (water-resistant if possible). Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the many New York walking tours, so you should be prepared. If you think it’s too hot for a walking tour you can always check out some of New York’s bus tours.
In summer it frequently rains in NYC, so an umbrella is a must but a light sweater or waterproof jacket could also save your trip. These can also be very useful for keeping you warm in the air conditioned museums, theatres or stores.
If you’re planning to go to the theatre or to a fancy restaurant bring a nice dress, preferably wrinkle-free. Also don’t forget to take a pair of nice shoes to match with it. You can also bring a few accessories, like a couple of nice earrings or necklaces that you could pair with several of your outfits.
With all those skyscrapers, museums and theatres it’s easy to forget that Manhattan is an island and New York is surrounded by water, which means if you are in the city during summer you have plenty of opportunities to go to the beach. There are lots of beaches you can visit during your stay, whether in New York or nearby. Access to all New York City beaches is free, although swimming is only permitted when a lifeguard is on duty, from Memorial Day Weekend through Labour Day from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
If you’re planning to go to the beach remember to bring a swimsuit, flip-flops and a towel (if that’s too heavy you can always buy a cheap towel there). Don’t forget to bring some sun cream too. It doesn’t matter if you go to the beach or not. A summer in New York requires it.
If you’re planning to visit New York this summer you’ll probably know the city has lots of summer activities you won’t like to miss. Fourth of July festivities in New York are great and there are lots of concerts and outdoor film festivals too, such as the Shakespeare in the Park. So if you’re planning to check out some of these free concerts and events don’t forget to bring a picnic blanket. You can prepare a picnic dinner in your New York apartment rental and take it to the park. You can even bring some wine and beer if you’re discrete. No doubt, you’ll feel like a real New Yorker!
