When it comes to travel, if you’re anything like me, you tend to eat and drink a little bit more than normal. I mean, seriously, take a look at this post and you’ll feel MY pain.
I’ve never been one to do more than just add a bit more walking into my life when I hit the road, but nowadays my metabolism isn’t quite what it used to be. Because of this, I’ve been researching some great ways that I can incorporate exercise gear into my packing list, and here is what I found:
Hula Hoop
Huh? Hula hoop? Aren’t those big and round and just plain BIG?
Well, that’s what I thought until I had a Twitter convo with Erica of Over Yonderlust who got a special weighted exercise hula hoop that dismantles for easy packing. Who knew?!
Jump Rope
Now that I think about the jump rope, I’m beginning to think this could be one excellent multi-purpose travel item. Not only can you use a jump rope to exercise, you can also use it to make a makeshift clothes line or to just tie stuff together.
I mean, seriously, why don’t I already have one?
Resistance Bands
After I had my knee surgery, I was given some resistance bands as part of my physical therapy.
It’s crazy to think that something so simple could do so much, but it works.
Tie the end in a loop and attach to the bottom of a bed post, and you’ve got an instant gym wherever you roam.
Yoga Mat
A yoga mat is a favorite for those practicing yoga since they roll up quite small and can be attached to a backpack much like a sleeping bag would.
With a yoga mat, you can escape your loud and smelly hostel and head to the beach for fresh air and a bit of exercise.
Running Shoes
It seems so logical, but a good pair of running shoes is really all you ever need. Plus, you can wear your running shoes when spending the travel day out walking around museums and on tours.
This, too, is a multi-purpose piece of travel gear.
Is there any packable exercise equipment that I missed for this list? Let me know by leaving a comment.

I love my Vibram five fingers for running/hiking because they’re also super light to pack!
The jumping rope is a great idea! I wish I had thought of that before I started my trip. I’ll have to go and buy one!
So simple, and so overlooked!
